Aesthetic
values are: "Virtues that emanate from a person, animal, work of art,
fashion, landscape, event, or object, among others, and generate positive or
negative reactions or evaluations." The aesthetic values of something
are determined based on what an individual considers beautiful or ugly. For
example, while one person may see trees with their branches and leaves
intertwined in a seemingly random way as the epitome of beauty, another may see
this same randomness in the branches and leaves as far from beautiful due to
the lack of harmony and proportion. This indicates that aesthetic values
depend largely on individuals' perceptions of a particular thing. These
perceptions may vary over time, and the aesthetic values of something may
change over time because external aesthetics, in terms of forms, adapt to
different times and societies. This is particularly evident in art, where some
works of art lose their aesthetic value while others continue to dazzle
generations with their beauty over time, such as the Great Pyramid of Giza, the
Hanging Gardens of Babylon, the Statue of Zeus at Olympia, the Temple of
Artemis at Ephesus, the Mausoleum at Halicarnassus, the Colossus of Rhodes, and
the Lighthouse of Alexandria.
Aesthetic
values are numerous, including: beauty, sublimity, sublime, appetizing,
harmonious, unpleasant, delicate, elegant, terrifying, tragic, humorous,
chaotic, dramatic, and balanced, among others. However, the most important of
these values is beauty itself, which is what is considered beautiful from an
aesthetic perspective. Beauty pertains to what is pleasing to the senses and
perceptions. Nevertheless, determining what is beautiful or not is a difficult
task because it depends on people's reactions to something. Among the qualities
of beauty is balance, which is harmony and consonance, and coherence, which
refers to the proper interweaving of the elements or structural components of
something, resulting in a stunning, integrated structure. However, if something
evokes resentment and discontent in a person, it is known as hideous or
repulsive, and is the very essence of evil.
