Betrayal is defined as
divulging a secret entrusted to you; neglecting or mismanaging a deposit;
breaking a covenant; disobeying God and His Messenger; persisting in sin
without repentance; failing to fulfill assigned duties; giving unwise advice;
and assigning responsibilities to those unfit for them due to kinship,
affection, or other reasons.
The Prophet
(peace and blessings be upon him) said: “When trustworthiness is lost, then
await the Hour.” He was asked, "How is it lost?” He replied: “When
trustworthiness is lost, then await the Hour.” He was asked, "How is it
lost, O Messenger of God?” He said, "When authority is entrusted to those
who are not qualified for it, then await the Hour (of Judgment).” (Narrated by
Abu Hurairah; Source: Sahih al-Bukhari; Hadith classification: Sahih by
al-Bukhari). And betrayal is one of the signs of a hypocrite, as our Prophet
Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “The signs of a hypocrite are
three: when he speaks, he lies; when he makes a promise, he breaks it; and when
he is entrusted with something, he betrays that trust.” (Narrated by Abu
Hurairah; Source: 'Aridat al-Ahwadhi; Hadith classification: Sahih by Ibn
al-Arabi).
And God does
not love the traitor, as He, the Exalted, says: “Indeed, God does not love the
treacherous.” (Surah Al-Anfal: 58), and in His saying: “Indeed, God does not
love every traitor.” The word "ungrateful" (Kafūr) appears in Surah
Al-Hajj: 38 and in His saying, "Indeed, Allah does not love one who is a
habitually treacherous sinner" (Al-Hajj: 107). Whoever Allah does not love
loses both this world and the Hereafter, even if he has Qarun's treasures and
all the world's temptations. This world is short, no matter how long it seems,
and its pleasures are fleeting, no matter how abundant they are. The traitor is
not loved by Allah or His Messenger. He is deviant from the truth and is not
worthy of guidance. Allah will not grant success to his schemes nor enable him
to succeed. The traitor hides from people, out of shame and fear of the
ugliness of his actions, but he cannot hide from Allah, who knows his secrets
and whispers, and nothing about his condition or deeds is hidden from Him. The
traitor's habit is to swear falsely, bear false witness, and so on.
The traitor
will be exposed on the Day of Resurrection before all witnesses. On the authority
of Ibn Umar (may God be pleased with him), he said, "The Messenger of God
(peace and blessings be upon him) said, 'When God gathers the first and the
last on the Day of Resurrection, a banner will be raised for every traitor, and
it will be said, "This is the treachery of so-and-so, son of
so-and-so." "That is, the traitor will have a banner of his treachery
raised behind him on the Day of Resurrection, to publicly shame and disgrace
him before all witnesses. Then it will be said: “This is the sign of so-and-so’s
treachery,” so he will become known and disgraced among the people. Treachery,
in its essence, is the breaking of a promise, and it is commonly understood as
a man betraying someone under his protection and trust. Because treachery is
usually concealed and hidden, its perpetrator will be publicly shamed and his
secret revealed so that his disgrace will be complete.
And whoever
deceives and betrays the Muslims and breaks a trust will not be among the first
to enter the Gardens of Bliss. On the authority of Abu Ya’la Ma'qil ibn Yasar
(may Allah be pleased with him), it is said, "There is no servant whom
Allah entrusts with a flock and who dies on the day he dies while being
deceitful towards his flock, except that Allah will forbid Paradise for him."
(Narrated by Ma'qil ibn Yasar; Source: Sahih al-Jami'; Summary of the Hadith
scholar's ruling (Al-Albani): Authentic). That is, if he betrays what he was
entrusted with and does not advise sincerely regarding what he was appointed to
and entrusted with, either by neglecting to teach them what is obligatory for
them in their religion and to guide them to it and by failing to fulfill his
duty of preserving their laws and defending them against anyone who attempts to
introduce something foreign into them, or by distorting their meanings, or by
neglecting their limits, or by neglecting their rights, or by failing to
protect them. "If he possesses their property and fights their enemy, or
abandons the practice of justice among them—then he has deceived them."
Because
treachery is a vile trait, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used
to seek refuge in God from it: "O God, I seek refuge in You from hunger,
for it is a wretched companion, and I seek refuge in You from treachery, for it
is a wretched inner trait." (Narrated by Abu Hurairah; Source: Sahih Abi
Dawud; Classified as Hasan by Al-Albani).
If we look at
the pure Islamic law, we observe that it forbids this vile trait, as in the
saying of the Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him): "Return
the trust to the one who entrusted you, and do not betray the one who betrayed
you." (Narrated by a Companion; Source: Sahih Abi Dawud; Classified as
Sahih by Al-Albani).
