Common Name: Cayenne Pepper
Scientific Name: Cayenne pepper. It
belongs to the Solanaceae family, which is part of the order Solanaceae, and is
classified as angiosperms (flowering plants).
Culinary Uses: Chili peppers are used
in cooking spicy dishes, either as a powder or in their whole form.
Medical Uses: Chili peppers can be
used to relieve pain because they contain capsaicin, the compound that gives
them their characteristic heat. When applied topically, capsaicin may help
reduce pain by decreasing the amount of a neuropeptide known as P-P that
travels to the brain to signal pain. The less P-P there is, the less pain is
felt.
Capsaicin is also used
to treat psoriasis, an autoimmune condition that causes itchy, scaling, and red
patches on the skin. While there is currently no cure for psoriasis, topical
capsaicin creams may help reduce itching and improve the skin's appearance.
Capsaicin increases the
amount of heat the body produces, boosting metabolism and causing more calories
to be burned. It is also somewhat effective in reducing hunger, leading to
eating less food throughout the day. Capsaicin also stimulates the nerves in
the stomach, sending signals that protect it from injury. Pepper may help
increase the production of digestive fluids, deliver enzymes to the stomach to
aid digestion, and provide additional protection against stomach infections.
Capsaicin helps lower
high blood pressure, which also reduces the risk of heart disease. It may slow
the growth of cancer cells and may even be able to kill cancer cells in certain
types of cancer, including prostate, skin, and pancreatic cancer.
