Common Name: Sage
Scientific Name: Salvia officinalis, a member of the mint
family (Lamiaceae), order Lamiales, class Angiosperms (flowering plants).
Culinary Uses: Sage is used to make "cold sage
sauce," a popular dish in some European cuisines, which has a pleasantly
peppery flavor. In Italian cuisine, sage is a key ingredient in saltimbocca and
other dishes. Saltimbocca is a popular Italian dish consisting of veal wrapped
in sage and marinated in oil or brine, as desired. In British and American
cooking, sage and stuffed onions are served with roast turkey or chicken at
Christmas, Thanksgiving, and Sunday dinners. Sage is not favored in French
cuisine, despite the common use of traditional herbs there.
Medical Uses: Sage is used in folk medicine to improve
digestive health and treat various symptoms of digestive and colon ailments. It
helps with loss of appetite, bloating, stomach pain or inflammation, diarrhea,
colic, stomach ulcers, dry mouth, and indigestion. A gargle made from sage tea
and honey is used to relieve symptoms of sore throat, hoarseness, and cough
associated with upper chest infections, as it acts as a natural antiseptic and
disinfectant. Sage helps expel phlegm, reducing its amount in the chest and
airways, thus providing relief, especially if sage tea is drunk once or twice
daily. Drinking sage tea also calms the nerves and relieves tension and anxiety
due to its rosmarinic acid content. It also promotes better sleep, especially
during periods of stress.
Sage helps relieve
pain, particularly headaches caused by tension and anxiety. Drinking sage tea
can alleviate coughs and colds, thus reducing sleep disturbances caused by
coughing.
Drinking hot sage tea
can lower elevated blood sugar levels, helping diabetics avoid complications
from sudden spikes in blood sugar, especially when used in moderation and
without excessive sugar intake.
Sage tea helps reduce
fat absorption, thus preventing weight gain, a contributing factor to high
blood pressure and diabetes.
Drinking sage tea
three times a day for four weeks can help reduce the severity and frequency of
hot flashes experienced by some men during prostate cancer treatment.
A sage leaf infusion
is used as a vaginal wash for women to treat vaginal discharge. This is
prepared by mixing one tablespoon of leaves with half a liter of boiling water.
The leaves are left to steep for fifteen minutes, then the mixture is strained,
cooled, and used. Consuming sage extract for eight weeks can alleviate
menopausal symptoms, hot flashes, and night sweats in women. It also relieves
abdominal pain and cramps during menstruation.
Sage extract is used
to treat oral herpes when mixed with rhubarb extract in a cream. This cream is
applied to the affected area every 2-4 hours while the patient is awake.
Treatment begins on the first day of an oral herpes outbreak and continues for
10-14 days.
Drinking sage extract
three times daily for two months helps lower LDL cholesterol and raise HDL
cholesterol.
Applying a 2% sage
extract to sunburned areas helps reduce redness and pain. Sage contains
anti-inflammatory compounds that help treat skin conditions such as dandruff,
eczema, and dermatitis.
Taking two different
types of sage extracts for four months can improve memory and enhance
information retention in patients with moderate Alzheimer's disease.
Sage helps increase
hair pigmentation because it contains a range of natural pigments capable of
coloring gray hair. It also contains numerous antioxidants that protect against
and reduce the appearance of gray hair. Furthermore, it is highly effective in
cases of baldness and thinning hair due to its natural oils that strengthen
hair roots and follicles.
In cases of hormonal
imbalances, sage oil may help balance hormone levels, particularly estrogen,
which is important for pregnancy.
A decoction of sage
leaves is used as a sitz bath to treat hemorrhoids. Fresh leaves are used to
treat bleeding and inflamed gums (by rubbing them on the gums), loose teeth,
excessive sweating, and drooling. They are also used to treat depression and
improve memory.
