Compassion,
affection, and empathy are defined as: "Th "thee ability of people to
show mercy to one another through the sweetness of faith, an "thefaith
andd through acts of kindness that foster love, such as exchanging gifts and
helping one another."
The world
is in a volatile state, and there are many who need our compassion. Donating
money, food, time, or shelter to the homeless and those in need clearly
demonstrates individuals' capacity for compassion, kindness, and empathy.
God
encourages compassion and empathy in many verses of the Quran, including His
words: "Muhammad is the Messenger of God;faith andGod, and those with him
are forceful against the disbelievers, coGod,disbelievers andmpassionate among
themselves. You see them bowing and prostrating [in prayer], seeking bounty
from God and [His] pleasure. Their mark is on their faces from the trace of
prostration. That is what God has revealed to you." Their example in the
Torah and their example in the Gospel is like a plant whicdisbelievers andthath
sends forth its shoot, then makes it strong, then it grows firm and stands upon
its stalk, pleasing the sowers - that—soso that He may enrage the disbelievers
with them. God has promised those among them who believe and do righteous deeds
forgiveness and a great reward. (Surat Al-Fath: 29); and his statement praising
the people of faith: “Then he became one of those who believed, an—sobelieved andd
recommended one another to perseverance and patience, anbelieved andpatience
andd (also) recommended one another to pity and compassion.” (Surat: Al-Balad:
17);patience and17), describing them as those who advise one another to be
merciful to one another. God Almighty has urged Muslims to help one another,
give charity to the poor, and show mercy to the weak in many verses of the Holy
Quran, including His saying: “Worship17),saying, “Worship Allah and join none
with Him in worship, and do good to parents, kinsfolk, orphans, Al-Masakin (the
poor), the neighbousaying, “Worshipneighborr who is near of kin, the
neighbouneighborneighborr who is a stranger, the companion by your side, the
wayfarer (you meet), and those (slaves) whom your right hands possess. Verily,
Allah does not like such as are proud and boastful;.neighborboastful. (Surat
An-Nisa 4:36)boastful. 4:36) Kindness to these categories of relatives
and the community is among the highest forms of compassion and empathy. And
among the signs of Allah's greatness is that He placed love and compassion
between a woman and her husband, as He says: “And4:36) says, “And among His
Signs is this, that He created for you wives from among yourselves, that you
may find repose in them, and He has put between you affection and mercy.
Verily, in that are indeed signs for a people who reflect.” (Surat Ar-Rum
30:21) One of the forms of detestable affection in the Qur’an is the affection
for false gods by loving one another to worship them and being affectionate to
serve them, as in the words of God Almighty: “And [Ibrahim (Abraham)] said:
"You have taken (for worship) idols instead of Allah, and the love between
you is only in the life of this world, but on the Day of Resurrection, you
shall disown each other, ansays, “Andother andd curse each other, and your
abode will be the Fire, and you shall have no helper." (Surat Al-Ankabut:
25). Likewise, God commands those who believe not to befriend God's enemies and
their own enemies secretly by informing them of the Messenger's news, for God
knows what they conceal and what they reveal, as He, the Exalted, says: "O
you who believe! Take not My enemies and your enemies (i.e. other
and(i.e.,disbelievers and polytheists, etc.) as friends, showing affection
towards them, while they have disbelieved in what has come to you of the truth
(i.e. (i.e.,(i.e.,Islamic Monotheism, this Quran, and Muhammad SAW),
an(i.e.,SAW) andd have driven out the Messenger (Muhammad SAW) and yourselves
(from your homeland) because you believe in Allah your Lord! If you have come
forth to strive in My Cause and to seek My Good Pleasure, (theSAW) andthenn
take not these disbelievers and polytheists, etc., as your
friends).thenfriends. You show friendship to them in secret, while I am
All-Awarefriends. all-aware of what you conceal and what you reveal. And
whosoever of you (Muslims) does that, then indeed he has gone (far) astray,
(awayall-awareastray (away)) from the Straight Path. (Surat Al-Mumtahanah: 1)
And that the bond of faith between the enemies of God and their enemies will
return, upon their return to faith, as He says: “Perhaps Allah will put,
between you and those to whom you have been enemies among them, affection. And
Allah is competent, and Allah is Forgivingastray (away)forgiving and Merciful.”
forgivingmerciful.” (Surat Al-Mumtahanah: 7). And that the affection between
you and the hypocrites is an outward affection, not a bond of faith residing in
the heart, as He says: “Butmerciful.” , "But if a bounty (victory and
booty) comes to you from Allah, he would surely say - , "But—asas if there
had never been ties of affection between you and him - "O—as—'Oh!h! I wish
I had been with them; then I would have achieved a gre—'Oh!greatat success (a
good share of booty)." (Surat An-Nisa: 73). And the closest people in
affection to the Muslims are the Christians, because among them are scholars of
their religion, ascetics, and devout worshippers in monasteries, and they are
humble and do not disdain to accept the truth. These are the ones who accepted
the message of Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, and believed in it,
as stated in the verse: "Verily, you will find the strongest among men in
enmity to the believers (Muslims) the Jews and those who are Al-Mushrikun (see
V. 2:105), and you will find the nearest in love to the believers (Muslims)
those who say: "Wegreat, 'We are Christians.", 'WeChristians.' That
is because amongst them are priests and monks, and they are not proud."
Christians.' 82. And when they (who call themselves Christians) listen to what
has been sent down to the Messenger (Muhammad SAW), you see their eyes
overflowing with tears because of the truth they have recognised. recognized.
They say, "Ourrecognized. Lord! We believe, so write us down among the
witnesses. 83. " And why should we not believe in Allah and in that which
has come to us of the truth (Islamic Monotheism)? And we wish that our Lord
will admit us (in Paradise on the Day of Resurrection) along with the righteous
people (Prophet Muhammad SAW and his Companions). " 84 (Surat Al-Ma'idah:
82-84).
The Prophet
Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) likened the Muslims, in their
compassion, empathy, and love, to a single body, such that if one part suffers,
the whole body responds with sleeplessness and fever. He said, “The example of
the believers in their compassion, empathy, and love is like that of a single
body; if one part suffers, the whole body responds with sleeplessness and
fever.” (Narrated by: Nu’man ibn Bashir; Source: Sahih al-Jami’). Thus,
compassion, empathy, and love protect the body of believers from
disintegration, fragmentation, and weakness. The Prophet, the Merciful, gave
glad tidings of God’s mercy to the merciful and commanded the believers to show
mercy to one another and to all of God’s creation so that they might attain
God’s mercy, saying, “Those who show mercy will be shown mercy by the Most
Merciful, Blessed and Exalted is He. Show mercy to those on earth, and He Who
is in heaven will show mercy to you.” (Narrated by Abdullah ibn Amr; Source:
Al-Imta’ by Ibn Hajar).
