Cultural values are "a set of beliefs, languages, customs,
traditions, and relationships that define a society or group of people."
In other words, they are "the standards of what is acceptable or
unacceptable, important or unimportant, right or wrong in a society or
community."
Cultural values define a people's cultural identity, customs,
attitudes, and social characteristics. They also encompass their cultural
heritage and are therefore unique and distinct within each social group. For
this reason, cultural values can be differentiated between various societies,
regardless of their shared set of common human and social values. In this
sense, cultural values enable members of any society to recognize, harmonize
with, and feel a sense of belonging to their deep roots in the customs they
have learned throughout their lives. Cultural values reinforce the connection
individuals have to their customs and traditions. They are part of a heritage
passed down from generation to generation over time. However, cultural values
may change in meaning or importance based on social and cultural changes that
occur. Therefore, they are abstract and subject to change over time.
Among the cultural values of a society are tolerance, respect,
equality, generosity, love, loyalty, empathy, friendliness, and openness to
others.
