tinctorius, belonging to the Asteraceae family, which is part of the
Asterales order, class Angiosperms (flowering plants).
Culinary Uses:
Safflower flowers are sometimes used in cooking as a cheaper alternative to
saffron. Dried safflower petals may also be used to make a type of herbal tea.
Medicinal Uses:
Safflower is a laxative and diuretic. Safflower tea is used to treat fever,
measles, and rashes in children and adults. It is mixed with a paste made from
flour to treat boils. Safflower flowers are used as a powder or mixed with
olive oil to treat coronary artery disease, blood clots, menstrual problems,
jaundice, and postpartum abdominal pain. They are also used to treat bruises,
skin pain and inflammation, wounds, and joint pain and stiffness. Dyes
extracted from safflower are used in the production of cosmetics.
Safflower seeds are also used to produce safflower oil, which is
rich in fatty acids and vitamin E. This oil is used in cooking, soap making,
whitening paints, and for massaging the hair to improve its growth.
