Emotional
values are "the values and principles that govern people's behavior in
the realm of feelings and emotions." Emotional values aim to fulfill
basic human needs, such as integrity, compassion, loyalty, love, affection, and
respect, etc. A person's emotional values influence their psychological
reactions, their way of thinking, and their behavior toward their surrounding
environment in response to their emotional state; they allow them to choose
some things over others. Furthermore, they guide all decisions a person makes
throughout their life, whether small or large, and, like material, religious,
social, economic, moral, aesthetic, and intellectual values, they contribute to
controlling human behavior.
Emotions
may be short-term, such as annoyance with a coworker, or long-term, such as
lasting grief over the loss of a relationship or a loved one. People who
develop significant emotional values or who govern their lives by giving great
importance to emotional values are called sensitive people.
Islam did
not neglect emotional values but addressed them within a sound ethical
framework that leads to a righteous life and attains the Hereafter. Emotional
values are scattered throughout the Holy Quran and the books of the Prophetic
Sunnah, in a system that covers all the emotions and emotional fluctuations
experienced by individuals, families, and society. Here is the mother of our
master Moses, peace and blessings be upon him, and upon our Messenger, the best
of prayers and the most complete of peace. God commands her to cast her newborn
son into the river and reassures her not to fear or grieve. God Almighty says,
and His word is the truth: “And We inspired the mother of Musa (Moses), (saying): "Suckle him
[Musa (Moses)], but when you fear for him, then cast him into the river and
fear not, nor grieve. Verily! We shall bring him back to you and shall make him
one of (our) messengers." (Surat
Al-Qasas: 7). Fear is a psychological state that afflicts a person, causing emotional
turmoil due to the anticipation of something unpleasant. Grief is a
psychological depression that occurs when a person experiences something
unpleasant, such as the death of a loved one or the loss of something
cherished. This good news was given to Moses' mother to reassure her heart and
calm her fears. Then the noble Surah beautifully and movingly depicted the
longing and anxiety of Moses' mother after her son left her. God Almighty said,
"And
the heart of the mother of Musa (Moses) became empty [from every thought,
except the thought of Musa (Moses)]. She was very near to disclosing his case
(i.e., the child is her son) had we not strengthened her heart (with faith) so
that she might remain as one of the believers." (Surat Al-Qasas: 10). That is, after Moses' mother cast him into
the river, and Pharaoh's family picked him up, and she learned of this, her
heart and mind became free from thinking about anything in this life except for
one thing, which was the fate of her son, our master Moses, peace be upon him.
This expression accurately portrays her psychological state, as if she had lost
everything in her heart except for the matter of her son, the apple of her eye.
