Intellectual
values are defined as "the set of virtues that enable a person to
appreciate truth, reason, and knowledge, critically assessing what is
considered socially correct, both as an individual and in a situation."
Intellectual
values involve generating ideas from knowledge, thought, and wisdom so that
people understand what is happening, as well as the decisions and stances they
take. Therefore, knowing the truth is crucial. Based on knowledge, people can
consider and reflect on all the options presented to them at any given moment,
whether it's to confront a problem, positively influence something, offer a
solution, or carry out an activity. In other words, it's putting intellectual
creativity into practice. Knowledge, wisdom, and creativity are intellectual
values that allow for a critical examination of reality and an appreciation
of the importance of truth and other values—social, moral, or personal—that
strive to make each individual a better person. Thus, intellectual values
help us learn more about what is considered right and positive for us as
individuals and for society as a whole. Reason allows people to generate ideas
from their experiences and knowledge, and it also allows them to formulate
social or political theories as a reaction to specific personal, social, and
intellectual circumstances.
What is the
framework of Islamic thought? The Holy Quran defines the framework of Islamic
thought through the concepts of reasoning, reflection, remembrance,
contemplation, meditation, observation, insight, and consideration (Nur al-Din
Qallala) in a sequential manner that embraces one another. Directing the
faculties of reason to move along the straight path is known as reasoning.
Reasoning is the wellspring and abundant source of reflection. Reflection is
not confined to any place or time; it occurs in everything that touches this
life and the hereafter. If reflection is on the past, it is known as
remembrance; if it is on the future, it is known as meditation. Reflecting on
the consequences of actions is known as contemplation. Observation means
thinking about what we see of things and beings with our eyes, while reflecting
on things and beings with the heart is known as insight, which combines reason
and the heart. Reflection, which allows us to reach meaning and truth through
speech, thought, and lessons, is known as contemplation, as in the words of
God. Almighty: "So take warning, O people of vision!" (Surat Al-Hashr: 2). One who encompasses and
comprehends all processes of contemplation is known as a mujtahid (one who
strives to understand).
