Abdullah ibn Zayd al-Ansari
al-Khazraji al-Harithi was a companion of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon
him) from the Ansar (Helpers of Medina). He was known by the kunya Abu
Muhammad. He was the brother of Harith ibn Zayd ibn Abd Rabbih. His children
were Muhammad (whose mother was Sa'dah bint Kulayb) and Umm Humayd bint
Abdullah (whose mother was from Yemen).
Abdullah ibn Zayd al-Ansari was of
medium height.
He participated in the Second Pledge
of Aqaba and fought at the Battles of Badr, Uhud, and the Trench, as well as
other battles. He carried the banner of Banu al-Harith ibn al-Khazraj during
the Conquest of Mecca. Abdullah ibn Zayd could write in Arabic before Islam, at
a time when writing was rare among the Arabs.
Abdullah ibn Zayd had a vision of
the call to prayer (adhan) in the first year of the Hijra. He went to the
Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) and said, “O Messenger of
God, I had a vision last night. A man wearing two green garments passed by me,
carrying a bell in his hand. I said to him, ‘O servant of God, will you sell
this bell?’ He said, ‘What will you do with it?’ I said, ‘We will use it to
call people to prayer.’ He said, ‘Shall I not guide you to something better
than that?’ I said, ‘What is it?’” He said: “Say: Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar,
Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar. Ashhadu an la ilaha illa Allah, Ashhadu an la ilaha
illa Allah. Ashhadu anna Muhammadan rasul Allah, Ashhadu anna Muhammadan rasul
Allah. Hayya ‘ala as-salah, Hayya ‘ala as-salah. Hayya ‘ala al-falah, Hayya
‘ala al-falah. Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar. La ilaha illa Allah.” So the Prophet
Muhammad ordered Bilal ibn Rabah to give the call to prayer according to what
Abdullah had seen.
Then the words of God Almighty were
revealed concerning him: “And whoso obeys Allah and the Messenger (Muhammad
SAW), then they will be in the company of those on whom Allah has bestowed His
Grace, of the Prophets, the Siddiqun (those followers of the Prophets who were
first and foremost to believe in them, like Abu Bakr As-Siddiq), the martyrs,
and the righteous. And how excellent these companions are!” (Surat An-Nisa: 69)
69) When he went to the Prophet Muhammad to complain about the Companions'
longing for him when they were away, he wondered how they could see the Prophet
Muhammad in the Hereafter, given his high station in Paradise. This verse was
then revealed. It is also narrated that when he received news of the Prophet
Muhammad's death, he prayed to God to blind him so that he would not see
anything after him until he met him, and he was blinded immediately.
Abdullah ibn Zayd died in Medina in
the year 32 AH, at the age of 64. Uthman ibn Affan led the funeral prayer for
him. Al-Hakim al-Naysaburi said, "The correct view is that he was killed
at Uhud," based on a narration from his daughter who went to Umar ibn Abd
al-Aziz and said, "I am the daughter of Abdullah ibn Zayd. My father
witnessed Badr and was killed at Uhud." Umar said, "Ask me for
whatever you wish," and he gave it to her.
