Khansa
bint Khidham al-Ansariyyah was a noble female companion of the Prophet Muhammad
(peace and blessings be upon him) from the Banu Amr ibn Awf tribe. She is
famous for her stance with the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon
him) when her father married her off while she was a widow (previously married)
without her knowledge or consent. She went to the Prophet (peace and blessings
be upon him), who annulled the marriage and gave her the right to choose. -
It
was narrated on the authority of Khansa bint Khidham al-Ansariyyah: “Her father
married her off while she was a widow, and she disliked that. So she went to
the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and he annulled the
marriage.” (Source: Sahih al-Bukhari; Summary of the Hadith scholar’s ruling
(al-Bukhari): Authentic).
Islam
is keen on women’s rights and interests, and among these rights is that she
should not be forced into marriage, and that her opinion should be considered
in this matter.
In
this hadith, Khansa bint Khidham al-Ansariyyah (may Allah be pleased with her)
narrates that her father married her off while she was a widow—that is, she had
been married before—without her consent. He asked her permission, but she
disliked the marriage. So she went to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon
him) and told him what her father had done. The Prophet (peace and blessings be
upon him) then annulled the marriage, meaning he ruled it invalid, not that he
dissolved it after it had been concluded.
And
in the hadith: Whoever marries off his widowed daughter against her will, his
marriage is invalid.
This demonstrates Islam's precedence in considering a woman's opinion in matters concerning her.
Her
second marriage: She later married Abu Lubaba ibn Abd al-Mundhir.
Importance: Her story is evidence of the
principle of a woman's consent in marriage, and that Islam guarantees her right
to choose and agree to marriag
