Professional values, ethics, or what is known as a
code of conduct are "a set of standards and values specific to a
particular profession, such as medicine, pharmacy, law, commerce, agriculture,
or others. These values vary from one profession to another."
The aim of professional values is to unify all
members of the profession and maintain its continuity and stability in a way
that ensures the motivation of those working within it. Therefore, the
existence and application of a code of conduct for each profession is essential
to maintaining the relationship between professionals in all their fields, thus
ensuring the unity and stability of society.
Among the Islamic values that members of different
professions should possess are mastery in work, sincerity in it, and performing
it in the best possible way, following the guidance of our Prophet Muhammad
(peace and blessings be upon him): "Indeed, Allah loves that when one of
you does a job, he does it with excellence." (Narrated by Aisha, the Mother
of the Believers; Source: Sahih al-Jami') Preserving work time and not wasting
it on things that are useless and without benefit is to clear one's conscience
before God and to stay away from cheating and what is forbidden, for whoever
steals people's money and does not fear God, God will punish him severely for
his injustice and aggression towards people's money. The Messenger of God, may
God bless him and grant him peace, said, “By God, no one of you will take
anything without his right except that he will meet God carrying it on the Day
of Resurrection.” Diligence and determination are the path to obtaining lawful
sustenance, while laziness extinguishes the light of sustenance and destroys
it. The Messenger of God, may God bless him and grant him peace, used to say:
“O God, I seek refuge in You from helplessness and laziness, cowardice and
miserliness and senility, and I seek refuge in You from the torment of the
grave, and I seek refuge in You from the trials of life and death.” (Narrated
by Anas bin Malik; Source: Sahih al-Bukhari) And through cooperation, giving is
multiplied, sustenance is blessed, and goodness flows like rivers. God Almighty
said, “O you who believe! Violate not the sanctity of the symbols of Allah, nor
of the sacred month, nor of the animals brought for sacrifice, nor of the
garlanded people or animals, etc. [Marked by the garlands on their necks made
from the outer part of the tree stems (of Makkah) for their security], nor the
people coming to the Sacred House (Makkah), seeking the bounty and good
pleasure of their Lord. But when you finish the Ihram (of Hajj or 'Umrah), you
may hunt, and let not the hatred of some people in (once) stopping you from
Al-Masjid-al-Haram (at Makkah) lead you to transgression (and hostility on your
part). Help one another in Al-Birr and At-Taqwa (virtue, righteousness, and
piety), but do not help one another in sin and transgression. And fear Allah.
Verily, Allah is severe in punishment. (Surat Al-Maidah 5:2) And be of good
character, for good character increases sustenance and leads to the love of God
and the love of people. The Messenger of God, peace and blessings be upon him,
said, “The best among you are those who are best in character.” (Narrated by
Abdullah ibn Amr; Source: Sahih al-Bukhari). Avoid working with oppressors and
their accomplices, and all those like them, whether they be oppressors,
traitors, thieves, bribe-takers, usurers, or those who amass wealth unlawfully.
And fear God, for He is the Watcher, the Witness, the Guardian over every soul,
the One who holds the reins of every creature, and the One who knows what is in
the hearts. Nothing is hidden from Him in the heavens or on earth.
