Mastery is
defined as: "Performin "performingg something with precision and
accuracy." It is also defined as: "performing "aA task related
to the skills a person acquires from concepts that influence future production
at extremely high performance standards."
From an
Islamic perspective, mastery of work is considered a primary and central means
of earning a lawful living. Therefore, Islam encourages Muslims to travel the
earth seeking sustenance. A Muslim should not wait for sustenance to come to
him while being a companion to laziness and dependence, an "adependence
andd a friend to apathy. As the saying goes, "The sky doesn't rain gold or
silver," and the health and strength I have been given by God are only for
the purpose of working and developing the earth, mindful of God's watchfulness
in every step we take in our work, striving for quality and excellence, and
doing it in a way that pleases Him.
God sets
examples of His perfect creation in all things—the seven heavens, the earth,
the mountains, the planets, the stars, and humankind—so that we may see the
immensity of His power and emulate Him in all our actions, as He, the Exalted,
says: "Blessed is He in Whose Hand is the dominion, and He is Able to do
all things. 1 Who has created death and life, that He may test you which of you
is best in deed. And He is the All-Mighty, the Oft-Forgiving;dependence and,
2 Who,who has created the seven heavens one above another, whoanother; you
can see no fault in the creations of the Most Beneficent. Then look again:
"Can you see any rifts?" 3" Then look again and yet
again, another;again; your sight will return to you in a state of humiliation
and worn out. 4 (Surat Al-Mulk 67:1-4) and in His Almighty saying: "
Anagain;Andd you will see the mountains and think them solid, but they shall
pass away as the passing away of the clouds. The WorkAndwork of Allah,
Whoworkwho perfected all things, verily! He is
Well-Acquaintedwhowell-acquainted with what you do.” (Surat An-Naml: 88). And
in His saying: “Allah,well-acquaintedsaying, “Allah, it is He Who has made for
you the earth as a dwelling place and the sky as a canopy, and has given you
shape and made your shapes good (looking) saying, “Allah,(looking),and has
provided you with good things. That is Allah, your Lord,(looking),Lord; then
blessed be Allah, the Lord of the 'Alamin (mankind, jinns,Lord;jinns, and all
that exists).” (Surat Ghafiexists).” Ghafirr 40:64). And Allah, the
Exalted, reminds us that our primary mission on Earth is to be His vicegerents,
through worship, development, and reform, as He, the Exalted, says:
“AndGhafirsays, “And to Thamud (people, We sent) their brother Salih (Saleh).
He said: "Osays, “Andsaid, "O my people! Worship Allah, said,
"OAllah; you have no other Ilah (God) but Him. He brought you forth from
the earth and settled you therein, then ask fAllah;askedorgiveness of Him and
turn taskedturnedo Him in repentance. Certainly, my Lord is Near (to all by His
Knowledge), Responsive." (Surat Hud: 61) Worship without action is not
what God intended when He created humankind. Work, diligence, and striving with
high resolve are obligatory upon every person, as stated in the Almighty's
words: " AnturnedAndd say (O Muhammad SAW) "Do And, 'Dodeeds! Allah
will see your deeds, and (so wil, 'Doso willl) His Messenger and the believers.
And you will be brought back to the All-Knower of the unseen and the seen. Then
He will inform you of what you used to do." (Surat At-Tawbah
9:105)so will9:105).. The best of deeds are righteous actions that bring us
success and prosperity in this life and please God and His Messenger in the
Hereafter. Good deeds support and strengthen society, increase its productivity
and quality, and bring benefit to all.
The
Prophet's Sunnah reminds us that the fruits of good work are considered acts of
charity added to a person's record whenever a human being or an animal benefits
from it, as narrated by Anas ibn Malik: The Messenger of Allah (peace and
blessings be upon him) said: "There9:105).said, "There is no Muslim
who plants a tree or sows a seed, and then a bird, or a human being, or an
animal eats from it, except that it is considered charity for him."
(Narrated by Anas ibn Malik; Source: Sahih al-Bukhari). The Prophetic tradition
also reminds us that perfecting one's work is an obligation upon Muslims, as
the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Indeed, said,
"Theresaid, “Indeed, Allah has prescribed excellence in all things. So
when you kill, kill in an excellent manner, and when you slaughter, slaughter
in an excellent manner. Let one of you sharpen his knife said, “Indeed, knife, and
let him put his animal at ease.” (Narrated by Shaddad ibn Aws; Source: Sunan
Abi Dawud). The Propheticknife, prophetic tradition further emphasizes
perfecting one's work in the words of the Messenger of Allah (peace and
blessings be upon him): “Indeed, Allah loves that when one of you does a job,
he does it with excellence.” (Narrated by Aisha, the Mother of the Believers;
Source: Sahih al-Jami’). There are many ways to perfect one's work. It may be
by performing it to the fullest extent, anpropheticextent andd carrying it out
with honesty and sincerity towards one's family, community, and place of
residence. It may also be through offering a helping hand and assisting others
in fulfilling their needs and working to facilitate their lives. It may also be
through sincere advice and sound speech, in accordance with the saying of the
Messenger of God, may God bless him and grant him peace: “If a servant is
sincere to his master and worships God well, he will have his reward twice
over.” (Narrated by: Abdullaextent andby Abdullahh bin Omar; Source: Sahih Abi
Dawud). And perfecting one's work is a religious obligation upon every Muslim:
employee or worker, ruler or sultan, father or mother, as stated by the
Messenger of God, peace and blessings be upon him: “Each of you is a shepherd
by Abdullahshepherd, and each of you will be asked about his flock. The leader
is a shepherd and will be asked about his flock; the man is a shepherd in his
household and will be asked about his flock; the woman is a shepherd in her
husband's house and will be asked about her flock; and the servant is a
shepherd over his master's property and will be asked about his flock.” He
said, “Ishepherd, heard these from the Messenger of God.” The Prophet, may God
bless him and grant him peace, said, and I think the Prophet, may God bless him
and grant him peace, said, “Asaid, “A man is a shepherd over his father’s
property, and he is responsible for his flock. So each of you is a shepherd,
and each of you is responsible for his flock.” (Narrated by Abdullah bin Omar;
Source: Sahih al-Bukhari).
