Sarah was the daughter of Haran, wife of the Prophet
Abraham, and mother of the Prophet Isaac, father of the Prophet Jacob, from
whose lineage descended the prophets of the Children of Israel.
She is mentioned in the Torah as "Sarai," which
later became "Sarah" after God promised her a son, despite her being
an elderly, barren woman. "Sarai" is a feminine given name of
biblical origin, meaning "my lady" or "my princess" in
Hebrew, and can also refer to a beautiful, charming woman. The name Sarah is
spelled in several ways, such as "Sara" and "Sarah," and is
a feminine given name of Aramaic origin, not Hebrew, as both Sarah and Abraham
were Aramaeans, not Hebrews. It means "princess" or "noble
lady," while in Arabic it means "joy and delight."
Sarah was characterized by great qualities such as deep
faith, loyalty to her husband, devotion to God, great patience during her long
years of infertility, generosity and hospitality, and finally, immense joy upon
receiving the angels' glad tidings of a son, making her the mother of prophets.
Sarah is mentioned in the Quran without further
specification. Her name is mentioned in more than one place, including the
words of God Almighty: “And verily, there came Our Messengers to Ibrahim
(Abraham) with glad tidings. They said, "Salam" (greetings or peace!).
He answered, "Salam" (greetings or peace!), and he hastened to
entertain them with a roasted calf. 69 But when he saw their hands went not
towards it (the meal), he felt some mistrust of them and conceived a fear of
them. They said, "Fear not, we have been sent against the people of Lout
(Lot)." 70 And his wife was standing (there), and she laughed (either
because the messengers did not eat their food or because she was glad for the
destruction of the people of Lout (Lot)). But we gave her glad tidings of
Ishaque (Isaac), and after him, of Ya'qub (Jacob). 71 She said (in
astonishment): "Woe unto me! Shall I bear a child while I am an old woman,
and here is my husband, an old man? Verily! This is a strange thing!" 72
They said, "Do you wonder at the Decree of Allah? The mercy of Allah and His
blessings be on you, O the family [of Ibrahim (Abraham)]. Surely, He (Allah) is
All-Praiseworthy, All-Glorious." (73) [Surah Hud: 69-72] And in His
saying, “51:29 And his wife approached with a cry [of alarm] and struck her
face and said, "[I am]A barren old woman!" (29) [Surah Adh-Dhariyat]
Lady Sarah had grown old, reaching 90 years, and her
husband Abraham had reached 120 years, but she longed for a child. The good
news came to her with the messengers whom God sent to destroy the people of
Lot—who had deviated from human nature in the matter of homosexuality.
The father of guests, our master Abraham, received the
messengers, unaware of their purpose, and then offered them a roasted calf.
When he saw that they did not eat, he disapproved of their action. So they told
him their story: “And our messengers came to Abraham with good tidings. They
said, ‘Peace.’ He said, ‘Peace.’ And verily, there came Our messengers to
Ibrahim (Abraham) with glad tidings. They said, "Salam" (greetings or
peace!). He answered, "Salam" (greetings or peace!), and he hastened
to entertain them with a roasted calf.
Verily! This is a strange thing!" 72.
They said, "Do you wonder at the Decree of Allah? The mercy of Allah and
His blessings be on you, O the family [of Ibrahim (Abraham)]. Surely, He
(Allah) is All-Praiseworthy, All-Glorious" (73) [Surah Hud: 69-72]. Sarah
rejoiced at the destruction of the corrupt people of Lot, and she received
three glad tidings: the glad tidings of Isaac, the glad tidings of Jacob, and
the glad tidings that she would live to see her grandchildren. But God did not
only grant her wish but also made her the mother of prophets and made most of
the prophets descend from Abraham through her. After being an old, barren woman
who had despaired of motherhood and childbirth, she became the mother of
prophets, the wife of the Prophet Abraham, and the mother of the Prophet Isaac,
the father of the Prophet Jacob, from whose lineage descend the prophets of the
Children of Israel.
