Common
Name: Star Aniseed
Scientific
Name: Illicium
verum, belonging to the Schisandraceae family, which is part of the
Asterales order, class Angiosperms.
Culinary
Uses: Star anise is
used in place of star anise in baking due to its lower cost. It enhances the
flavor of meat and is used as a spice in Indian cuisine, particularly in
biryani and herbal teas, as well as in Chinese, Malaysian, and Indonesian
dishes. In Chinese cuisine, star anise is a key ingredient in the traditional
five-spice powder (a blend of black pepper, fennel, cloves, cinnamon, and star
anise) and a major ingredient in Vietnamese noodle soup (a mixture of bean
sprouts, lime juice, rice noodles, and other ingredients). Additionally, star
anise is added to coffee to enhance its flavor. In coffee, the pods can be
reused multiple times, as the extraction of flavor components increases with
repeated infusion of hot water into the fruit.
Medical
Importance: Star
anise has been used in traditional Chinese medicine for thousands of years and
has recently gained acceptance in some Western medical practices.
Star
anise has long been used to treat stomach aches, inflammation, constipation,
and indigestion. Its natural fiber content helps alleviate constipation, a
common complaint among those with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). It also
relieves abdominal pain associated with IBS, reduces stomach ulcers, improves
digestion, and alleviates indigestion due to its iron, magnesium, zinc, and
potassium content. Star anise improves libido in both men and women and plays a
role in treating male menopause.
Star
anise contains limonene, an acidic oil with anti-inflammatory, antibacterial,
and anticancer properties. It helps strengthen the immune system, reduces
anxiety and stress, and aids in weight loss.
Star
anise oil helps detoxify the skin due to its anethole content. It also contains
tannins, which help even out skin tone, tighten the skin, prevent sagging, and
combat wrinkles.
Star
anise tea helps increase breast milk flow, regulate menstruation, and
facilitate childbirth. However, consuming large quantities may cause hormonal
imbalances in pregnant women due to its estrogen-like properties.
Star
anise tea helps maintain cardiovascular health by lowering high blood pressure,
thanks to its calcium and potassium content, which are essential for heart
health, and its role in reducing bad cholesterol.
Star
anise helps relieve sore throats, hoarseness, and coughs, and helps lower and
soften the voice due to its anti-inflammatory properties. This is why Quran
reciters, singers, and television presenters often drink a cup of star anise
tea before their work.
Star anise
has other benefits, such as treating coughs, asthma, influenza, urinary tract
infections, rheumatic pain, and lower back pain. It is also an expectorant,
antiviral, antifungal, and antibacterial, and a natural deodorant, making it
useful as a mouthwash. It is also used to protect hair from falling out and to
give it shine, which is why it is used in shampoos and conditioners. In
addition, it helps eliminate lice from the hair.
